breathing space

Time after time,

Looking at the blank square of the calendar and thinking,

This Tuesday or Wednesday or that Saturday,

I will be free.

Look at that empty page!

And then the day arrives

And it is so quick to fill up with

Thoughts and memories and plans,

Until there is no room left to even flex a toe,

Much less to draw out the little nook that lies between each rib.

There is a lesson here!

Before it is possible to exhale all out the window,

To blow away

The boxes and papers and regrets,

You must first have the space to gather up a deep breath.

And then you must slowly learn

To savour the place between

All the taking in and letting go.

Because it is in this space

That everything is done.
